The Genevans (Geneva's Softball Team)

Running to base
The Genevans are an adult, co-ed, slow-pitch softball team, made up of members and friends of Geneva Campus Church. We play in the Madison city Tampa Bay League against other Madison teams. We have a ten week season starting at the beginning of May and ending in July. On this web page you can learn more about:

News Flash!!

The Genevans had a great season this summer. Not only did the team have a lot of fun playing, but they increased their wins by four hundred percent compared to last year. The team thanks all the dedicated fans that came to cheer throughout the season.

Attending a Game

We love having lots of fans come to our games to help cheer us on to victory. Games and parking are free and last for one hour, so they are great for families and people who don't have an entire evening to spend at a softball game.

Getting to a game: Games are held at either Bowman (south) or Elver (west) parks. Each of these parks has several diamonds so check the schedule above to see which diamond we will be playing on for a given game. The number of each diamond is clearly marked with a sign, or you can just look for other Genevans.

About the games: Games last for one hour or seven innings, whichever is shorter. Once the hour time limit is up, the inning that is being played will be finished and the game will then be over, unless there is a tie, then a tiebreaker will be used. Occasionally, games will start a little late, due to the previous game lasting a little over an hour. Games usually start within five to ten minutes of the posted start time, however. A note on the rules: if you visit a game you might notice that the rules are slightly different than for baseball (we only get two strikes!), the umpire isn't blind, this is just slow pitch.

What to bring: How much you want to bring to a game is up to you. Other than yourself, there isn't anything you will absolutely need. At some games, the mosquitoes can be a nuisance (this is more likely to occur at Elver park since it is closer to a pond), so you may want to consider bringing bug spray. Washrooms and metal bleachers are located at both parks, but if you want more comfortable seating you may want to consider bringing a soft blanket, cushion, or folding chair. Drinking fountains are also found at the parks, but, especially on hot days, you may want to bring a water bottle. We love getting pictures from our games, so bring a camera and shoot some photos.

We ask that you please do not bring alcoholic beverages, beverages in glass containers, or boom boxes. Smoking is also restricted at park locations. Dogs are permitted (on leash) at both parks.

Rained out Games: Games are canceled in the event of rain and rescheduled for the end of our season. Information about rained out games can be found on the Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) website. We will also post information about weather cancellations on this website, but due to the nature of updating websites, the MSCR website is likely to be the most up-to-date.

Getting Involved with the Team

Just because you aren't on the Genevans roster, doesn't mean that you can't get involved with the team. We need people to help us out in the following ways:

Coming to games: We need fans to help cheer us on to victory.

Serving as a scorekeeper: Half of our games are considered "home games", and on these days we need to provide a scorekeeper. No experience is needed to be a scorekeeper, but a familiarity with the basics of softball helps. We need scorekeepers for the following games.

If you are willing to help out please contact Kayt Frisch.

Helping out with a practice: We have fairly informal practices about once a week and we are always happy to have additional people come to help with filing members of another team or helping to field balls, while we practice bating. Announcements for the upcoming practice times/locations will be posted here under the News Flash!! section. Practices will also be cancelled/postponed in the event of rain, so if the weather looks questionable, check here before heading out to make sure the practice has not been cancelled.
